ARTIST STATEMENT

Originally from the Netherlands Hester Heuff is a practising artist who works independently from her studio in Dublin. Heuff worked as an aquatic ecologist for the first half of her life, switching her focus to art-making in the late 1990’s.

Natural processes observed through her work as an ecologist remain integral to her art practice. These relate to all manner of changes in the world, processes which repeat themselves in cycles like tides, waves, cycles of life and death, changes in time and space. These processes are further informed by her personal experiences of life examined through meditation and the practice of yoga, highlighting changes occurring not only in nature, but also in the microcosm of the mind.

Heuff specializes in ceramics, most of her works are hand built and she develops her own glazes. In addition to this she works across various other media such as batik, watercolour, photography and video. Her work ranges from representational to abstract and utilitarian. Across these methods and media a playful and intuitive approach remains central to her work.
